Sanbolic's Melio clustered file system now supports extended attributes, enabling scale out of NFS file services. Melio has also improved performance for pass through block storage applications, such as virtual disk files.
Melio FS is already being used for scale out of CIFS-based file services from Windows file server by allowing multiple file servers to read and write from a single file system on a SAN volume. Clients on the network see a single file system which can be accessed though any of the file servers on the cluster. The addition of extended attributes enables scale-out clusters of Windows file server for NFS file services as well. This solution uses native Windows tools including Network Load Balancing. "Scale-out of file services using clusters of cost-effective industry standard hardware is becoming increasingly important as file-based storage now is the fastest growing segment of enterprise storage" said Noemi Greyzdorf, storage analyst at IDC.
Sanbolic has also added capability to support pass through of block objects such as virtual disk files without imposing any file system overhead. "Server virtualization has a dependency on shared storage to enable virtual machine availability and migration, and virtual server performance is very dependant on storage performance. Sanbolic has dramatically increased performance of pass-through block objects like virtual disks, and has embedded performance monitoring and quality of service tools in the file system" said Momchil Michailov, founder of Sanbolic. "This makes Melio FS an ideal product for enabling shared SAN storage for virtualization environments."
Sanbolic's Melio file clustered file system and LaScala clustered volume manager install easily on physical or virtual servers, and can utilize any fibre channel or iSCSI storage hardware. Windows active directory, DFS, and clustering features are supported.
Sanbolic software currently supports Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003 R2 and Windows Server 2008, including Server Core. Sanbolic distributes its product solutions worldwide through a network of distributors, OEMs, VARs and system integrators.
Sanbolic will be exhibiting at the Storage Networking World in Dallas on October 14 and 15.
