An Extra Year: Grief and Loss in the New Age

“An Extra Year: Grief and Loss in the New Age” by Contemporary Spirituality Teacher and Activist Steven Morrison takes a new look at the process of grieving in modern society. Based upon his own encounter with loss, “An Extra Year” delves into Morrison’s work in contemporary spirituality.

"An Extra Year" is the true story of a couple whose relationship continues after one of them dies. It chronicles communication they shared - on their own and with the aid of clairvoyants - and how that communication helped the author not to live with grief and loss, but to live through and beyond it.

According to Morrison, early readers of the book convinced him that his intention of offering this story for comfort, healing, and spirituality on multiple levels is being realized.

“They want to have their own copies and buy copies for people they care about,” Morrison says. “So I am thrilled to make it available to anyone and everyone who is hungry for its messages of love and life and living and spirituality.”

Morrison wrote the book when his partner died of cancer in 2005 and realized his grief and loss process was radically different from that of most others he had witnessed. He believes his contemporary, non-religious, religion-friendly, universally spiritual approach toward grief and loss is potentially far more effective than approaches he learned as a psychotherapist.

"Everyone else was talking in terms of agony and being grief-stricken and in unbearable pain, which I certainly understood. Yet, as I moved through my own grief and loss process, I felt I had been singled out of a crowd, raised up, flooded with light, and gifted with a deeper, richer, and far more layered living experience," Morrison explains.

Morrison loves living an utterly regular life in a spiritually responsible manner and with his writing and teaching, helps others to do the same thing - all under the banner of Spiritually Responsible Living. He created the Spiritual Workout, an acclaimed class currently in its third year, and maintains a blog called Spiritually Responsible Politics, applying the concepts with which he works to our political landscape in an effort to elevate the public discourse. Morrison has published several articles in 2008 and "An Extra Year" marks his debut as a book author and the first time he chronicles his own experiences by applying the very concepts he teaches to his own life.
