MarcoPolo, an application that combines your Facebook Friends List with your iPhone to offer geo-location and communication services, was launched today by AC Ideas Corporation.
MarcoPolo is designed to go beyond what traditional social networking tools offer in terms of communication. The application uses the iPhone's GPS and location software to bring geographical context to the conversations that people have with their online friends. Specifically the application has been designed to help with the desire to locate others, or be located. Because of this, MarcoPolo is best suited to social meet-ups like concerts, parties and conventions or to situations of distress, such as car troubles.
"MarcoPolo offers users a simple way of letting friends know where they currently are and what they are doing," says Alex Koff, Head of Development. "The interface is basic, yet highly intuitive. Once a user updates his or her location, all friends on his or her Facebok Friends List will see the location after launching MarcoPolo."
Once launched, MarcoPolo displays a list of Facebook friends that also have MarcoPolo installed on their iPhones. Each friend has his or her status displayed, as well as distance and how long ago s/he was there. MarcoPolo leverages Google Maps to show you either the geographical location of all friends or each friend individually. Options are also given for how you can contact each of the friends displayed. While MarcoPolo is tied to the Facebook Friends List for the purposes of determining who should see location and status updates, MarcoPolo is a standalone application, so the location information won't be seen on Facebook. This ensures privacy and offers the user control of their friends through a known and trusted medium.
"I really believe that MarcoPolo offers a great way to find friends wherever they may be," says Vice President of Marketing, Cobi Druxerman. "For me, this is the best application of its kind, because there are no unnecessary features. You can only see direct friends in the application and from there you can either get directions to them or you can call, email or SMS them. Because of this, it makes it extremely simple to let friends know where you are or where you want to meet up. MarcoPolo is especially great for those of us that are bad at taking or giving driving directions, or even explaining where we are. It makes finding your friends really easy."
