Light installation by international artist James Turrell places Franklin Park Conservatory's historic Palm House among a rare group of architectural light projects in the United States and the world.
Columbus, Ohio (Vocus/PRWEB ) October 15, 2008 -- A major, permanent light installation by international artist James Turrell now illuminates the historic glass John F. Wolfe Palm House at Franklin Park Conservatory in Columbus. Turrell's work fills the Palm House with volumes of changing light and color.
“James Turrell’s architectural light project transforms the Palm House and will draw visitors from across Ohio and around the globe to Franklin Park to watch the building perform,” said Bruce Harkey, executive director of the Conservatory. The Palm House installation places Franklin Park Conservatory among a rare group of architectural light projects in the United States and among an important list of international projects in France, Japan, Germany and Switzerland.
The Palm House is a Columbus landmark and the Conservatory’s most recognizable and treasured building. Local architect J.M. Freese designed the 1895 Victorian glass house after the famed horticulture building at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The Palm House has a long history as an acclaimed horticulture facility and is the only botanical garden in the world to own a signature collection from the internationally acclaimed artist, Dale Chihuly.
The work of James Turrell has been the subject of more than 140 solo exhibitions worldwide since 1967. Turrell is best known for having spent the past 35 years transforming the Roden Crater, a natural cinder volcano situated on the southwestern edge of the Painted Desert in northern Arizona, into a large-scale artwork.
Franklin Park Conservatory offers unique botanical collections, exhibitions, and educational programs. The Conservatory features 73,000 square feet of greenhouses and classrooms situated in a 90-acre urban park just minutes from downtown. As part of its unique focus on combining fine arts with horticulture, the Conservatory is the only botanical garden in the world to own a signature collection from the internationally acclaimed artist, Dale Chihuly. Franklin Park Conservatory is located at 1777 E. Broad St., Columbus, Ohio, 43203 and is open Tuesday - Sunday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Wednesday, 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. Admission is $7.50 for adults, $6.00 for seniors and students, and $4.00 for children 2-12.
