For 60 years, "Highlights for Children" has left an indelible imprint on the hearts and minds of tens of millions of children. It has improved reading skills, while helping to define and develop values like honesty, thoughtfulness and tolerance. Highlights for Children has extended their "Fun with a Purpose" tag line from their quintessential educational magazine out to a line of toys and crafts as the Highlights Catalog. These well-designed educational toys are available by phone through a mail-order catalog, as well as online through the Highlights' Corporate Website or the Highlights' Amazon Storefront. Bostech's LINC for Amazon solution was selected as the fast and easy way to manage order processing between Amazon.com and Highlights.
"Adding the Amazon channel for online orders was a great strategic fit." says Jamie Grove, Vice President, E-commerce, Highlights for Children. "We chose Amazon as a distribution outlet because of the strong magazine relationship Highlights already held with the organization, and the unique opportunity to reach 61 million families through this active online community."
"After the first few months in the Amazon market, we determined that the integration between our existing website's backend systems and Amazon could be much tighter," continued Jamie. Highlights for Children selected Bostech's LINC for Amazon to help streamline the Amazon order processing before heading into the 2007 holiday season, their peak catalog distribution period.
Bostech's LINC for Amazon exchanges product and order information between a client's site and the Amazon environment in accordance with specific Amazon category feed formats. In just a few weeks, Bostech automated Highlights for Children's process of retrieving orders from Amazon and went live, providing those orders to Highlights in a format that their systems could understand. This eliminated a time intensive process of synchronizing orders.
"With a full year of order processing and tens of thousands of transactions moved, LINC for Amazon has dramatically improved Highlights' order processing through Amazon." says Kevin Blake, Catalog Technology Manager at Highlights. "The hosted automation has saved in development resources by eliminating the manual processes associated with managing two independent ordering environments."
Additionally, the Bostech solution provides a secure means to receive Highlights' order acknowledgment and fulfillment feeds in their native format, then translate and send those feeds directly to Amazon. This key functionality streamlined the largest coordination issue for Highlights - the loading of Highlight's shipment confirmations.
"The LINC for Amazon solution was fast and easy to add into our existing infrastructure," says Kevin. "The Bostech support before, during, and after the launch of the Amazon integration was top-notch."
Based on that customer service relationship, Highlights for Children added a second Bostech solution, ChainBuilder ESB, into their production infrastructure. ChainBuilder ESB was selected to manage the translation of information between any catalog order (Amazon or elsewhere) and Highlights' warehouse system.
"We feel fortunate to have connected with the Highlights team of developers and to be a strategic part of their Amazon solution," says Erik Cooper, Product Architect for LINC for Amazon. "They are great people with great products and we are just happy to help them be successful."
