Science can be exciting and fun - girls just need to approach it in a way that satisfies their own curiosity and interests. Having the Beacon Street Girls use fiction to encourage girls' interest in science is another way of reaching our goals.

Today B*tween Productions Inc., home of the Beacon Street Girls (BSG), announced the release of two new books in its popular series on Simon & Schuster's Aladdin M!X tween imprint.

The first, "Green Algae and Bubble Gum Wars" was created in partnership with Sally Ride Science (SRS) to help encourage girls' interest in science. The second book, "Isabel's Texas Two-Step", centers on the artistic Isabel, her Latina heritage and her feelings as her family is immersed in her older sister's quinceañera. A quinceañera is the traditional celebration of a girl's 15th birthday.

"Green Algae and Bubble Gum Wars" has the BSG checking out a local Sally Ride Science Festival, modeled after the real world events. This inspires Avery to turn the Abigail Adams Junior High science fair into an environmental science fair. Meanwhile, the Queens of Mean are stirring up trouble at school, and Maeve is learning the "science of life" with a first bra and a serious crush on her tutor.

"The two new books demonstrate how we continue to support girls with exciting stories and characters with whom girls can identify. Historically, women have been underrepresented in math, science and technology-related careers, having been turned off during their tween years," said Addie Swartz, CEO of B*tween Productions. "Our goal is to create fun and entertaining stories that also impact girls' attitudes and behaviors."

"Working with the Beacon Street Girls has been a great way for us to reach girls everywhere," said Sally Ride, former astronaut and founder of Sally Ride Science. "Science can be exciting and fun - girls just need to approach it in a way that satisfies their own curiosity and interests. Having the Beacon Street Girls use fiction to encourage girls' interest in science is another way of reaching our goals."

In "Isabel's Texas Two-Step", Isabel feels left out when her family heads south to beautiful San Antonio, Texas, to get ready for her sister Elena Maria's big day. But the Lone Star State holds a few surprises for Isabel, too…like a major discovery that could completely rock the art world! "Isabel's Texas Two-Step" completes the BSG Special Adventure stories; now all the Beacon Street girls have their own special book. The BSG Special Adventures give each Beacon Street Girl a special experience that is meaningful to her and her fans.

The Beacon Street Girls books provide preteen girls with positive media and strong role models. The characters demonstrate appropriate behaviors and address issues preteen girls struggle with every day. B*tween works with a variety of world-renowned childhood development experts on how to best present the ideas and girl-centric issues embedded in each of the books.

Recently, a study by researchers at Duke Children's Hospital discovered that reading a Beacon Street Girls book, "Lake Rescue", made a difference for girls who read the book as part of the Duke's Healthy Lifestyles Program. Duke researchers asked girls in the program to read Lake Rescue, which had been carefully crafted with the help of pediatric experts to include specific healthy lifestyle and weight management guidance, as well as positive messages and strong role models. Six months later, the researchers found the "Lake Rescue" readers experienced a significant decrease in their BMI scores when compared to a control group of girls who hadn't read the book. These results could have a major impact on how doctors and nutrition professionals deal with overweight and obese children.

The Duke study and the Beacon Street Girls book series have received extensive media coverage since the study was presented at the Obesity Society annual meeting October 4, 2008. Learn more about the study at Beacon Street Girls Healthy You
