As part of their green initiative, Educational Warehouse, an educational merchandise destination for parents and teachers, announced the start of its crayon recycling program.

Visitors to the store can bring in old, broken, worn out and unusable crayons and put them in a designated container. All crayons will be sent away and recycled into new crayons. Every month, before the box is shipped to the National Crayon Recycling Program, store visitors can guess how much the box of crayons weighs. Whoever guesses correctly or is the closest will receive an Educational Warehouse gift card.

According to Crayola, children in the United States ages 2-8 spend an average of 28 minutes each day coloring and each child will wear down 730 crayons by his or her 10th birthday. The high numbers of crayons produced and used per year has motivated teachers to meet at online discussion boards such as http://www.proteacher.net to discuss what to do with the old product. And because wax is non-biodegradable, crayons last forever in a landfill creating waste which could otherwise be recycled.

"The crayon recycling program is going to be a lot of fun for our young customers," said Easton King, President / CEO of Educational Warehouse. "We are excited to teach children the value of recycling while giving them an opportunity to get rid of all those crayons they are not sure what to do with."

In conjunction with their crayon recycling program, Educational Warehouse will donate $5 for every pound of crayons collected each month to a local non-profit. Non-profits can submit their name at any Educational Warehouse location for a chance to receive a future month's donation. A different non-profit will be chosen each month.

All Educational Warehouse locations - Danbury and Norwalk, Conn., Carle Place, Spring Valley and White Plains, New York, and Randolph and Wayne, New Jersey. - have a crayon recycling bin.
