Trek Escapes believes that every person and business on the planet should take an active role in protecting the environment. Though Trek Escapes has been a leading "green" company since its inception in 1972, today it raised its level of commitment and issued a challenge to others to do the same.

Company president Dallyce Macas announced today that the company is participating in CBC's recently released One Million Acts of Green program. The initiative is a partnership between the CBC and Cisco Systems and the idea is to encourage Canadians to make small changes in lifestyle habits that can have a great cumulative positive effect on the environment.

"Our Toronto office Manager Anne Fairlie learned of the program while watching 'The Hour' hosted by George Stroumboulopoulos. Anne and Tom Gehrels, who is heading Trek's internal 'Environmental Division' circulated an email asking all of Trek employees to participate," explained Macas. "Trek Escapes has always been very concerned about social and environmental issues and we decided it was something that we simply had to do."

The company put together the "Trek is Green" group on the CBC website and is encouraging all of its customers and partners to join in. Interested parties can do so by visiting the CBC site, searching for the "Trek is Green" group and joining the group. As an added incentive, everyone that joins the group will be entered to win a trip for two in Italy entitled "Cooking & Chianti".

Macas doesn't stop there however. To make things more interesting she is issuing a challenge to the entire Canadian Travel Industry. "We plan on committing the travel industry to performing more acts of green each day."

Trek issued a challenge to all of it's travel company counterparts in Canada; achieve the highest number of green acts between November 1st to December 31st and Trek will donate $500 to Offsetters in the name of the winning travel company. Offsetters is an organization which invests in projects that prevent greenhouse gases to be emitted into the atmosphere.

When asked what would happen if Trek itself succeeded in achieving the most green acts in the industry during the challenge, Macas replied, "If we win, then we'll double the donation amount."
