Arlene's has seen the bulk of their revenue shift from rentals to retail sales, with a significant portion now coming from the web. With increasing pressure from overseas vendors, the quality and price of costumes has dropped dramatically. "It's now much less expensive to buy a costume than it is to sew one yourself," said Cindy Sinopoli, Owner of Arlene's.
Arlene's also faces competition from big box retailers that can buy thousands of costumes at a significant manufacturer's discount. "Even though our prices are reasonable, the big guys have big budgets for radio and television advertising. We're a small operation and just don't have the money for that," claims Cindy.
By the time Arlene's discovered Cazbah, they had attempted to create their own website and had been badly burned by a previous web development company. "We spent thousands of dollars and got very little because our vendor was focused on corporate clients," notes Cindy. "In fact, it became apparent that we didn't really own our website. Every change resulted in a new charge, and we were at wit's end trying to remedy the situation," she went on to say.
Arlene's signed on with CAZBAH in July of 2006 and has never looked back. "We have a good handle on what makes us unique," said Sinopoli. "It's the combination of both rental and retail costumes, as-well-as the professional line of stage makeup that we carry. What we needed was a way to grow our business on the Internet, which we definitely got with CAZBAH," she went on to say.
"We've seen increased sales every month," notes Cindy, "and that's what matters most. I expect even greater increases as we reach out to repeat customers and continue to tweak our site, especially during the off-peak periods," Cindy said. "I like CAZBAH's business model. It's so much easier to budget for a yearly expense rather than be nickel-and-dimed each month for every little alteration."
CAZBAH's business model is predicated on an annual service contract with its customers.
