Students Across Country Get 'Votes' Counted Thanks to BOOK IT! Program

Kids can vote online whether or not they participate in the BOOK IT! program. It's a fun way to gauge children's opinions on what's in the news.

The kids have voted, and Barack Obama and Sarah Palin are named the winners of presidential and vice presidential fun polls conducted by the BOOK IT!® Kids' Presidential Poll. The BOOK IT! program is the national reading incentive program led by Pizza Hut, Inc. With nearly one million participating classrooms nationwide, BOOK IT! is the nation's largest program that encourages literacy and a lifelong love of reading.

The BOOK IT! Kids' Presidential Poll results were collected online at http://www.bookitprogram.com/kidssay/.

"As we're counting down to Election Day, it's important to take a look at what's on the minds of our children," said Julie Palmer, a teacher at Derby Hills Elementary in Derby, Kan., who participated in the BOOK IT! program polls with her 4th grade class. "I love it that the
polls give kids a chance to express their opinion and provide students a way to participate in the election process."

Which candidate would students most like to have as a substitute teacher? The BOOK IT! Kids' Presidential Poll posed this question and found that Democratic candidate Sen. Barack Obama took 57 percent of the votes versus 43 percent for Republican candidate Sen. John McCain.

Between the vice presidential candidates, when students were asked which candidate they would invite over for dinner, 64 percent of kids opted for Republican candidate Gov. Sarah Palin as their dinner guest, versus 35 percent for Democratic candidate Sen. Joe Biden.

"This is the first year we've done the BOOK IT! Kids' Presidential Poll and the participation and results have been phenomenal," said Leslie Brunt, BOOK IT! program director. "Kids can vote online whether or not they participate in the BOOK IT! program. It's a fun way to gauge children's opinions on what's in the news."

The BOOK IT! Kids' Presidential Poll was part of the BOOK IT! Kids Say Web site, which features a new question weekly on Mondays with results posted on Fridays during the BOOK IT! program months - October through March.
