paybox Enables Interoperable m-Payment Service for Vodafone and o2 Germany

Partnering with paybox, Vodafone and o2 have launched mpass, a new operator-owned mobile payment system in Germany. mpass combines the proven direct debit scheme with an SMS payment confirmation on the mobile phone.

Frankfurt, Germany (PRWEB) October 31, 2008 -- paybox, the global market leader for mobile payment enterprise solutions headquartered in Germany, is proud to announce that the leading German mobile operators - Vodafone and o2 - have launched mpass, a new operator-owned mobile payment system in Germany by leveraging the paybox Mobiliser Platform.

In the first phase, mpass enables customer to securely pay online - with just an easy SMS-confirmation - and to topup airtime via the internet or their mobile phone. mpass already enables m-Payments at a number of well established online retailers such as CinemaxX, Blume2000.de, EuroFuchs, Kickz and Beate Uhse. In a next phase, end customers can use mpass to pay for m-Commerce services such as m-transportation and also for vending. In the future, mpass will integrate NFC initiated payments.

mpass combines the proven direct debit scheme with a SMS payment confirmation on the mobile phone. Almost 14 Mio Vodafone and o2 post-paid subscribers can activate mpass instantly. Prepaid subscribers, business subscribers and subscribers of any other networks with any mobile phone and any bank account can use "mpass" following a quick online registration

mpass leverages the national payment hub functionality of the paybox Mobiliser Platform to enable interoperable payments across any number of MOs, MVNOs, merchants and end customers. With paybox, Vodafone and o2 provide mpass as an ASP service to ensure openness and attractiveness to other market participants. Other German operators can easily join the system. The initial integration effort is low and aims to make the end customer activation for post-paid customers seamless.

"The development of an open, interoperable mobile Payment system level is crucial for the further expansion of a mobile service ecosystem", says Eckhard Ortwein, CEO paybox. "mpass is a blue-print for an operator-driven m-Payment strategy, in particular in developed markets."

paybox will present its paybox Mobiliser products at the Cartes in Paris (4-6 Nov.), the Mobile Money Transfer Conference in Dubai (10-11 Nov.) and at the Mobile World Congress in Macau (18-20 Nov.)
