Divorce Service Celebrates 5 Years of Service in Canada

For 5 years DivorceOnline.ca (www.DivorceOnline.ca) has been helping Canadians avoid the stress huge legal bills typically add to the divorce process. Thousands of Canadians from across the country and all income brackets have used this service to save millions in unnecessary legal fees. Plans include implementing bilingual service and extending service to Quebec.

New Glasgow, NS (PRWEB) November 1, 2008 -- DivorceOnline.ca turns 5 years old in November. The brainchild of Howard MacKinnon, this web site has been used by thousands of Canadians to avoid the huge legal fees that often accompany the decision to divorce.

"What we do is relieve people of all the work they really have no knowledge of or experience with," said MacKinnon. "We prepare all the legal documents they need and provide the instructions specific to their circumstances. Then they take the documents to the court and file them. No need for lawyers or an actual appearance before a judge."

The service can only assist with uncontested divorce and is much cheaper that a law firm typically charges for a full service. "In the end you get just as divorced with our service as you would by using a lawyer, for about a fifth of the cost and in less time. Since this service began we have saved Canadians several million dollars in unnecessary legal fees. This is money divorcing couples were able to pay bills with, provide for their children, or help start a new life," MacKinnon said.

The time saving, he explains, is from the fact that as soon as a person submits their order online his service gets busy preparing the documents which are emailed to the person within 2 business days. People who use a lawyer usually have to wait at least that long just to get an appointment. "Using our service you can have your initial paperwork filed at the court office before most people would have had their first meeting with their lawyer," said MacKinnon.

MacKinnon practiced law in Nova Scotia for 11 years before starting the service in 2003. By 2005 it warranted his full time attention so he wound up his practice and spends his time assisting staff by reviewing documents, keeping them up to date, overseeing staff and marketing the service. Plans for the coming year include offering bilingual service and making the service available in Quebec. This should be available before the end of 2008.

Most of the orders the service receives naturally come from the more populous provinces of Ontario, British Columbia, and Alberta but customers in the smaller provinces and territories make use of the service as well. Similarly customers come from all income brackets. Many have children and assets to consider and others have none. Many have been separated for years but some have just decided to call it quits. A free do it yourself separation agreement kit is provided to those who order divorce documents but is always delivered along with the advice to receive independent legal advice from a lawyer before signing it.

"We are careful not to ever cross the line into providing legal advice," MacKinnon explained. "Whenever a customer appears unsure of his or her legal rights or responsibilities we step back and explain that they ought to consult a lawyer. But we do publish a blog where we can give general divorce tips and information."

"I'm very pleased with how the business has developed and how appreciative our customers are. It's great to receive so many unsolicited expressions of gratitude from those who our service has helped to relieve the financial stress of divorce," MacKinnon said.
