ART Proves Your Backups are Good

New product from TSMworks tests all your backup clients.

Durham, NC (PRWEB) November 2, 2008 -- TSMworks today announced "ART: Automated Restore Testing".

ART, a virtual appliance for the Tivoli Storage Manager market, physically tests backups to see if they can be restored. ART can automatically restore-test thousands of clients over the course of a few days. Its web-based console shows the testing success rate and the most common causes of failure.

"We use some recent changes in TSM to masquerade as each client in turn", said Mr. Lindsay Morris, CEO of TSMworks. "The restores never touch the actual production machine. ART talks only to the TSM server, and respects the workload there as well." Concern about disrupting normal operations is one reason why restore testing seldom happens. The sheer volume of clients -- upwards of 10,000 at some sites -- also makes restore testing hard to achieve.

Yet various reports show shockingly high failure rates on restoring from backup (Yankee Group: 42%; Gartner, 71%; Strategic Research, 54%). ART addresses this failure rate by spot-checking a few random files on each backup client. This breadth of coverage -- up to 10,000 clients or more -- exposes problems that might go undetected for years, such as damaged tapes, corruption in internal databases, and operational problems that make a tape unavailable.

"In a perfect world, we'd do a complete DR test on every single client, every day," said Mr. Morris. "Obviously, that's unrealistic. But today, ART can spot-check every client; a future product from TSMworks will fully test the mission-critical clients; so using both, you can have test coverage as thorough as you wish, affordably."

Greg Yuzik, Senior Network Analyst at ARC Resources, Canada, calls it "... a win / win situation … not only is ART helping us test our restores but I was able to provide feedback on the product that led to enhancements that were incorporated in the software".

At introductory pricing, ART costs $2,500 for sites of 250 clients or less. Larger sites use a per-client pricing scheme. For more information on the ART solution, go to http://www.tsmworks.com/art
