Children, Incorporated's Warm Clothing Fund Marks 15th Year

International non-profit organization has provided winter clothing for over 40,000 children since 1993.

Richmond, VA (PRWEB) November 7, 2008

Children, Incorporated's Warm Clothing Fund, which outfits underprivileged children in the United States with winter clothing, launches its 15th annual fund drive today. The Warm Clothing Fund commenced in 1993 under the direction of CI founder Jeanne Clarke Wood and has helped over 40,000 children in need.

The 2008 Warm Clothing Fund has a goal of $40,000. Children, Incorporated expects the funds to benefit more than 1,400 children in the United States, from small towns in the Appalachian Mountains, to American Indian Reservations, to inner city youth in some of the nation's most economically depressed cities.

Children, Incorporated established the Warm Clothing Fund when Jeanne Clarke Wood was told about two sisters living in the hollows of eastern Kentucky sharing their winter clothes. The sisters shared the family's only winter coat. During severe weather, they would alternate who would wear the coat each day so that one could attend school while the other remained at home. The report prompted Mrs. Wood to take action and funds from the first Warm Clothing Fund were used to provide for children in the Appalachian Division.

Harsh weather makes life particularly difficult in many areas of the nation. American Indian Reservations in Arizona and New Mexico are often located in high elevations subjecting residents to survive in subzero temperatures at night. Children in Appalachia also face dangerously cold weather every winter. Children living in poor, inner city areas often go through winter with improper heating sources and subpar living conditions.

Children, Incorporated has three divisions in the United States that benefit from the Warm Clothing Fund. The Appalachian Division has ongoing projects in Kentucky, North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia. The American Indian Division supports children in South Dakota, North Dakota, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah. Children, Incorporated's Inner City Division benefits children in the following cities: Detroit, Michigan; Richmond, Virginia; New Orleans, Louisiana; Lexington, KY; and Augusta, Georgia.
