How Mobile Phones Connect the Word on the Street with the Man of the Moment

Times Square screen displays text messages of hope and support for Barack Obama

Boston, MA and New York, NY (Vocus/PRWEB ) November 7, 2008 -- As Times Square literally lit up with the news of Barack Obama's presidential win, an interactive screen powered by Cambridge, MA based LocaModa displayed hundreds of text messages every minute, capturing the celebratory mood around the world. The screen, on Broadway and 49th Street, which played an integral role in the fundraising efforts for ObamaMinute.com, connected supporters’ blogs and websites and enabled user-generated feeds to be displayed from the web or mobile phones. Over 10,000 supporters were emailed the link to the Times Square screen.

"Seeing these messages in Times Square made us all feel even more emotionally connected to the historic event," said Scott Cohen, a New York based photographer and filmmaker and creator of ObamaMinute.com.

The messages appeared in real-time on the Times Square screen, on the Obama Minute website, and were virally broadcast on Obama’s vast network of supporters’ blogs and websites. Messages were moderated according to outdoor media standards, but none of the messages that appeared on the Times Square screen were edited.

Jayne Karolow, LocaModa’s Director of Community, reflected on the democratization of technology through social media: "The way this presidential campaign has embraced web and mobile technologies has been truly inspiring. The ability for grassroots messages to live alongside mainstream media in Times Square is just one example of how user-generated content is spreading from the web to the street."
