Members of the Senate Make a Congressional Delegation Visit to the Afghanistan Technical Vocational Institute (ATVI) in Kabul, Afghanistan
Senators make a congression delegation visit to the first post-war vocational school in Afghanistan.
Vienna, VA (PRWEB) November 10, 2008 -- U.S. Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid, Senator Jeff Bingaman of NM, Senator Bill Nelson of FL, Senator Johnny Isakson of GA, and Senator Robert Menendez of NJ along with key Congressional staffers visited the Afghanistan Technical Vocational Institute, or ATVI (www.atvi.edu.af) in Kabul, Afghanistan. Delegation members toured the facility and exchanged conversations with students.
At one point, Senator Reid asked three young women what they thought of the United States. One very bright young lady with excellent English said that she did not understand what he meant. He then said, "What do you think of America"? She responded by saying "You mean You Guys?" All of the delegation were amused by her candor which was then followed by her comments that the "U.S. is the best, especially since it is giving us an opportunity to learn" and for her it was an opportunity to realize her goal of becoming an electrical engineer. She is currently enrolled in the construction skill trades.
"We developed the training courses for these sectors to reflect and supplement the country's needs. Offering a potential workforce the tools necessary to succeed will encourage the rebuilding of a war-torn society," said Mr. A. Huda Farouki, CEO of ANHAM LLC (www.anham.com).
ATVI is a co-educational, post-secondary institute launched in 2007 as the first private/public partnership focusing on rebuilding Afghanistan by training a cadre of young, qualified min-management technicians to meet not only new workforce demands, but also to provide preliminary training for those wishing to further their studies at the university level. ANHAM LLC invested $1.8 million to build, operate and provide scholarships for the first year and the Government of Afghanistan signed a ten-year lease for the land to build ATVI. Subsequently, through a USAID-funded contract with BearingPoint, ATVI is expanding the facilities at the main campus in Kabul including a women's dormitory, build a satellite center in Laghman, provide scholarships, buy additional equipment and identify technical assistance.
"The Institute will help graduates gain employment and salaries far above their current level, and place them in positions of responsibility so they can take a more active role in the rebuilding of Afghanistan," said Mr. Farouki.
About ATVI:
ATVI (www.atvi.edu.af) is a co-educational facility in Kabul, Afghanistan, where students are competitively selected through an examination process for the one-year condensed course. ATVI provides training for male and female students, drawn from Kabul, other major cities, and the rural areas. As a co-educational institution designed to support and educate all potentially productive members of Afghan society, ATVI strives to maintain a minimum threshold of 10% female enrollment. Courses are offered in our key training sectors: Automotive Systems Technology, Information and Communications Technology (ICT), Building and Construction Trades, and Horticulture. ATVI faculty and staff are highly qualified; all hold international educations, degrees, and certifications. More than half of the faculty members hold a Master's degree or higher.
In order to build a self-sufficient, income generating institute, ATVI incorporates profit centers as a major component of its operations. These profit centers benefit the Institute, the local community, and the student as they provide the hands-on experience needed to compound and complement the education provided in the classroom. Designed to be mutually beneficial, the profit centers offer students the opportunity to experience and train for their chosen career in a real-life environment, the local community purchasing the service is charged a competitive and affordable fee, and the provided revenue is used to maintain scholarship programs and facility upkeep.
