Rockville Attorney Bruce Avery Named President of Maryland's Collaborative Dispute Resolution Professionals Group
Growing organization of legal professionals in region seeks to replace contention with collaboration in family law disputes
Rockville, MD (Lexis Nexis/PRWEB ) November 12, 2008 -- Bruce E. Avery, senior partner in the Rockville-based law firm Avery & Upton, has been named president of Collaborative Dispute Resolution Professionals, Inc. (CDRP), a non-profit organization in Montgomery County, Maryland.
CDRP was founded in 2004 to educate the public about a positive process to resolve family law and other civil disputes. The group consists of lawyers, financial professionals and mental health experts who promote the use of the collaborative process in resolving legal disputes.
"Divorce and family custody disputes far too often turn into bitter, ugly fights that involve aggressive lawyers, huge legal bills and bad feelings that linger for a lifetime," said Avery. "We're here to tell people that it doesn't have to be that way -- there is a much preferable way to resolve these disputes that is better for everyone involved. The practice of collaborative law puts the principals in the dispute in charge of the process and provides them with specially trained legal advocates and other professionals, including a financial advisor and child specialists, who act as neutrals to help steer them to a peaceful outcome."
Avery is uniquely qualified to serve as the president of the group for the 2008-2009 term. After more than 15 years of military services as a member of the Judge Advocate General Corps, he established a family law practice in Rockville in 1993. Ten years later, he welcomed Prudence Upton, another attorney with experience in the field of family law, thereby creating Avery & Upton. Upton handles litigation duties for the firm. In addition, Avery & Upton now has two associates who also practice family law.
"Family law matters are already painful enough, there's simply no reason for that pain to be compounded by a lengthy, expensive and contentious litigation process," said Avery. "Our goal is to help our clients get on with their new lives as soon as possible and with the least damage to everyone involved, especially the children who are often innocent victims in a contentions divorce."
According to Avery, his firm makes available a free handbook for anyone going through a family law dispute. This handbook demystifies the family law system, provides helpful advice for navigating the process and offers tips for keeping your legal costs down.
