Penguin Computing Announces Support for the Enhanced Quad-Core AMD Opteron™ Processor in New HPC Server Offerings
Penguin Computing to incorporate the latest AMD offering, featuring significant enhancements to AMD's industry-defining native quad-core microprocessor technology.
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) November 13, 2008 -- Penguin Computing has announced its plan to support the upcoming release of the new Quad-Core AMD Opteron™ processor, built on 45nm process technology, in both rack mount (Penguin's "Altus Server" line) and blade server ("BladeRunner II") offerings for their High Performance Computing ("HPC") clusters.
"We have a long-standing and valued relationship with AMD, and we are pleased to demonstrate our support of these exciting new processors that are so well-suited for our HPC clients," says Matt Jacobs, Penguin Computing vice president for HPC.
Penguin's Altus Server line features AMD's new generation of Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors, code-named "Shanghai." This latest processor offers a number of innovative power management technologies including Enhanced AMD PowerNow!™ technology, with advanced performance-per-watt capabilities to help lower energy consumption. The new Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors also incorporate AMD Smart Fetch technology, which can help reduce power consumption by allowing cores to enter a "halt" state during idle times. With the combination of these power management innovations and dramatic gains in performance, the new Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor provides HPC customers significantly better performance in the same socket and thermal envelope as the previous generation of Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors.
"The new Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor offers a powerful combination of compute muscle and power efficiency; ideal for our HPC clients who are demanding more computing power with lower operational costs," said Jussi Kukkonen, director of product management, Penguin Computing. "We are very pleased to provide this advanced processor technology in our upcoming releases of our Altus and AMD Opteron processor-based BladeRunner II servers. We anticipate a terrific reception for these products by the HPC community."
"AMD is further strengthening our relationship with Penguin Computing by powering their new rack mount and blade servers with the enhanced Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor," said John Fruehe, director, Server and Workstation Division, AMD (NYSE: AMD). "The new Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor's improved energy efficiency capabilities, greater performance, and AMD's revolutionary Direct Connect Architecture provide a unique benefit in Penguin's HPC solutions by addressing key energy concerns while enabling superior performance and throughput for memory-intensive HPC applications."
