EnableTS Reports Incredible Drop of 70%+ Of Spam Over Night - But Beware, Be Patched...

EnableTS cheers at the removal of what it as long called the "McColo Problem". One of California's largest Hoster of spam providers' botnet's was taken out on Tuesday 11th November when Internet Connectivity was finally revoked. When the plug was pulled on McColo, who have their datacenters in San Jose, CA, EnableTS partners globally reported a drop of 70+% in mail flow through their own DataCenters.

London, UK (PRWEB) November 16, 2008 -- EnableTS Partners Globally have witnessed a massive reduction in Spam since an alleged Californian based ISP has been closed down. Industry bodies alongside analysts at Global Email Management Software Provider EnableTS have long been raising awareness of the volume of Spam which appears to come from the San Jose based business, McColo Corp., but it is only now that the providers of Internet Connectivity to McColo have acted.

Mike Harrison, Senior Analyst at EnableTS noted that "we saw a 70%+ reduction in email volume from 15:00 PST on Tuesday and our team of analysts quickly identified that the 'McColo problem' had been removed, there were cheers in the office that day"

However, before celebrating too quickly, this is the lull before the storm as businesses globally could be taken by surprise when SPAM volumes return to previous levels in the run up to Christmas and the spamming operations relocate. EnableTS also warns that with such a key player in the SPAM market removed, the SPAMMERS will be quick to find new methods and new technologies - as well as resorting to traditional methods of using the unsuspecting Enterprise networks to host their Botnets and distribute their messages.

With McColo allegedly being the master hosting centre for the biggest botnet offenders, Mega-D, Srizbi, Pushdo, Rustock and Warezov, the hunt is on to find new hosts. EnableTS estimates that it sees roughly 7 million computers infected with either Srizbi or Rustock sending spam over an average one-month period.

"The time is now" warns Mike Harrison "to ensure that your Infrastructure is patched and secure as we are already seeing a desperate hunt for replacement server space from which to distribute Spam. This is a crucial time of year for Spammers and they will not just accept defeat and walk away"

Apart from being a massive centre for botnet hosting, the servers at McColo have recently been the subject of investigation by private security researcher, Jart Armin, who documented the activity at McColo in a report published today which claims that McColo is currently hosting at least 40 different child pornography Web sites or sites that collect payment for the illicit content -- and that traffic analysis showed that one of the sites garnered between 15,000 and 25,000 visitors each day.

The businesses that allegedly host their sites in the McColo racks will today be looking to replace that space and hosting businesses should be quick to turn away McColo customers under suspicion of peddling these sites. But EnableTS also warns that it sees weekly reports from Partners that servers within the Enterprise are increasingly being targeted to host websites with illegal content, especially during times when staff are traditionally away from the office, such as Christmas, as the perpetrators are less likely to be caught.

The message over the coming weeks from EnableTS is ensure that you have fully patched and secure network!
