Two Girls: My Sisters 1996-2006 Photography Book by Ellie Brown A Ten-Year Photographic Project About Adolescent Female Identity
The quest for identity, anorexia, materialism, peer pressure, changing family relationships, grooming rituals are all topics of focus in Ellie Brown's ten-year photographic investigation of her sisters growing up. The images begin when they are eight and end when the girls graduate high school, marking the symbolic end of adolescence. The work is documentary but also touches on issues of sociology. This is appropriate for art and photography lovers as well as girls and their family and friends to open dialogue about girls' issues.
Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) November 16, 2008 -- Ellie Brown has published a book chronocling ten years of photographing her half-sisters into, through and out of adolescence looking at issues of the quest for identity and anorexia. The work was done from a fine art perspective but crosses into the world of sociology and women's studies with a chance for open dialogue about family, eating disorders, identity and a middle-class American material upbringing. It is fresh, timely, touching and poignant.
Kathleen Sweeney, author of Maiden USA and Robin Lasser, artist, have contributed insightful writings for the book in addition to Ellie Brown's first person account of her sisters and the act of photographing.
Shellburne Thurber writes: "Through insightful, deeply felt images of her two younger sisters, Ellie Brown documents the rocky shoals of adolescence. At a time when girls in our culture are struggling to define themselves under intense pressure to conform, Ellie's images feel particularly relevant. They also gently remind us that serious problems can arise during this period in a girl's life, which need to be more thoroughly examined and understood."
