Pittsburgh, PA (PRWEB) November 20, 2008 -- November 20th is the 31st anniversary of the Great American Smokeout, and in support of this national effort, Dorrance Publishing Co. Inc. of Pittsburgh offers The Cigarette Monster, a cartoon book written by Darrell Proctor that warns children of the hazards of smoking so that they will avoid getting into the habit.

Each year since 1977, the American Cancer Society has sponsored the Great American Smokeout on the third Thursday in November to encourage the 46 million Americans who smoke to quit for just 24 hours. The hope and the theory is that if you can quit for one day, and if others around you are motivated to quit for one day, then you may have the will and feel the support to quit for good. Groups throughout the country have used this day to call attention to the harmful effects of smoking. The American Cancer Society has encouraged activities that bring attention to the problem in a light-hearted way, such as the national sandwich shop company that gave out free cold turkey sandwiches to anyone who handed in half a pack of cigarettes and the preschoolers in Texas who put on the play "Gonesmoke."

In keeping with a more cheerful than gloomy approach, Darrell Proctor, in his book The Cigarette Monster shares with his readers a childlike view, complete with cartoon drawings, of the cigarette habit. He portrays the monster as a parasite growing inside the smoker. The monster's food is cigarette smoke, which makes him stronger. Every time you smoke, he grows and grows. How do you get rid of the monster? Just quit. Better still, this book gives parents, guardians, and educators a valuable tool to help children understand the dangers of this addictive habit so that they can help the little ones they love avoid this life-threatening problem by stopping it before it starts.

The Cigarette Monster ($8.00, paperback, ISBN: 0-8059-6790) is available directly from Dorrance Publishing. For more information, please contact Kathleen Haak, Merchandising Coordinator, at (800) 788-7654 or khaak@dorrancepublishing.com.
