Vienna, VA (PRWEB) November 19, 2008 -- As part of their ongoing mission to promote values-based leadership and provide a forum to discuss current critical social issues, the Aspen Institute (www.aspeninstitute.org) teamed with the African Wildlife Foundation to present the Wildlife Conservation & Human Well-Being in Africa Seminar in Johannesburg, South Africa last month. As a member of the Society of Fellows of the Aspen Institute, Mr. A. Huda Farouki, CEO of Financial Instrument & Investment Corporation (FIIC) (www.fiic.com), attended the seminar along with his wife, President of HII-Finance Corporation (www.hiifinance.com), Mrs. Samia Farouki.
Participants were welcomed to Johannesburg by South African Ambassador Barbara Masekela, followed by a round table discussion of South African Politics with South African historian and journalist, R.W. Johnson. Expert discussions also focused on Africa's wildlife resources and the environment, wildlife economics, and ethical approaches to sustainable wildlife conservation including endangered species conservation.
Following a guided tour of the Soweto area of Johannesburg and the Apartheid Museum, attendees traveled to the famed Singita Game Reserves in South Africa's Kruger National Park where they took part in several game drives.
"We had the opportunity not only to discuss the critical issues facing South Africa's wildlife and resources, but witness firsthand the breathtaking beauty of the landscape as well," noted Mr. A. Huda Farouki.
The focus of the seminar shifted to humanitarian concerns with discussions on poverty and disease, as well as economic issues with Jonathan Oppenheimer, Head of Chairman's Office, De Beers Group, and Elliot Gerson, Executive Vice President for Policy and Public Programs at the Aspen Institute leading the discussion about African business and prospects for the African economy.
"We certainly need more of these seminars to take place in order to get the attention and education necessary to do what is needed for saving these treasures," said Mr. Farouki.
