OGANER-Service Ltd. Picks ELVA-1 Radio Links for Frigid Norilsk

ELVA-1 Millimeter Wave Division, a world leader in ultra high speed wireless communications technologies, announces a new installation of its PPC-100 Fast Ethernet mm-wave link in Norilsk, Russia.

St. Petersburg, Russia (PRWEB) November 25, 2008 -- In Norilsk, OGANER faced a problem with severe cold. The temperature there fluctuates from -58 to +35 degrees Celsius, and the average annual temperature is -9.5 degrees. A permafrost condition, where the ground only thaws to a depth of 30 or 40 centimeters during the summer, makes the installation of a fiberoptic cable network extremely problematic. The average annual precipitation is about one centimeter, but up to 5 meters can fall in the winter. Such conditions make cabining (fiber installation) difficult and very expensive.

High-speed radio links were determined to be the most reasonable solution to these unforgiving conditions, and OGANER-Service Ltd. chose 40.5-43.5 GHz radio systems, model PPC-100, from ELVA-1 Mm-wave Division. These radio links provide reliable high speed data transmission in difficult weather conditions. They have successfully been used to transmit Voice over IP (VoIP) and Internet services over a distance of seven kilometers, and a recent installation has connected two local networks that are 20 kilometers apart.

Stanislav Makarenko, OGANER-Service's technical manager, has stated, "Only ELVA-1 radio links have been steady and reliable under Norilsk weather conditions, and have not frozen up, even during hard frosts. We were able to install this equipment at the beginning of February with no problems. The easy-to-adjust alignment mechanics of the mount allowed us to install the radios quickly and precisely. For all of the time that the link has been operating, it has not required additional adjustment. An added bonus was that ELVA-1 uses a special coating on the antenna radomes to prevent snow from sticking. This feature is very important in Norilsk."

ELVA-1 is currently unique in offering government agency certified radio links for broadband wireless data transmission in the 40.5-43.5 GHz millimeter wave frequency band. ELVA-1 was also the first company in the world to produce a gigabit capacity 71-86 GHz digital radio link that was especially designed to meet both ECC and FCC requirements.

Unlike centimeter wave frequencies, the "pencil beam" of radio waves produced from millimeter wave antennas presents no multipathing problems from reflections against the antenna's surroundings, such as buildings, walls and rooftops. The narrow pattern diagram of ELVA-1's Cassegrain antennas allows the disposition of many radio links to operate simultaneously in a limited area.

These radio bridges are not active network devices, so they function in the same manner as a fiberoptic cable that is physically connected end-to-end. Their large data transmission capacity enables network operators to provide a vast range of services, including Triple Play, which is the transmission of IPTV, video on demand and VoIP services at the same time.

Its fiber-class data capacity, superb quality of service, ease of installation and affordable cost make the PPC-100 fast Ethernet radio link an ideal solution for WiFi or mobile network extension and backhaul links, business WAN or IP telephony gateway connections, metropolitan area networks and rapid-deployment emergency communications.
