(PRWEB) November 25, 2008 -- Niche online retailer WorldStores.co.uk got a deadly surprise when a live Black Widow spider was found alive and well in a delivery it received from California over the weekend. The spider, which can kill a grown human (although usually doesn't), had made a home for itself in the exterior packaging of a container of iPod Speakers.
The RSPCA were called on Sunday after the deadly arachnid was captured in a plastic container by a female staff member (the men ran a mile) and the spider was taken away. The RSPCA were very surprised it lasted the journey given that the container was transported in the un-heated hold of an aircraft 35,000ft above the North Atlantic. These conditions usually kill spiders.
WorldStores director Joe Murray said of the incident "We've heard of this kind of thing before, but never in a container of high-tech iPod speakers. Unfortunately this has meant we've had to bring in the RSPCA to check the rest of the consignment that came in yesterday to ensure that this spider was alone - this could delay some orders shipping from iWorld by 24 hours - which we hope customers will understand given the circumstances. The ironic thing is that the bestselling product this weekend on our Gadget site, Gadget World was a gadget for capturing spiders without getting too close!"
