Vienna, VA (PRWEB) December 4, 2008
The University of Fairfax President Victor Berlin announced today that Dr. Brian Done, graduate of the University and Program Director at ManTech International Corporation briefed ManTech Executives and the National Cyber Security Division (NCSD), within the office Assistant Secretary for Cyber Security of the Department of Homeland Security on research he completed entitled The Relationship Between Continuing Professional Education and the Perceived and Objective Competence of CISSPs.
Especially in light of DoDD 8570.1 Department of Defense's Information Assurance Strategic Plan Goal #5, Dr. Done's work is critical to ensuring the security of the Nation's information systems infrastructure. His research addresses focuses on factors affecting the competency of Certified Information Security Professionals (CISSPs) who have the responsibility for ensuring and maintaining both public and private information systems.
His findings describe the positive impact the CISSP certification itself has on information security professionals' levels of competency. His work also produced objective measures for assessing CISSP competency. Finally, his results suggest improvements in continuing professional education programs for CISSPs and for other information security professionals in order to ensure that the Nation's information infrastructure is protected by experienced IA professionals who remain current with the state of the art in information security. In sum, Dr, Done's work reflects the cutting edge information security research projects undertaken by mid-career information assurance professionals who seek their doctorates at the University of Fairfax.
"ManTech senior management along with University of Fairfax faculty and staff provided me with unending support for completing this exciting project. My continuing concern is improving the capabilities of IA professionals in order to ensure my clients have the best IA support available. This research has helped me to better understand what I must do as an IA professional in order to ensure that my staff and I effectively maintain our capabilities. I also look forward to helping (ISC)2 interpret and where appropriate utilize the findings of this research. The University provides senior IA professionals a unique opportunity to hone their ability to make enterprise level contributions to their clients, employers and the field as a whole," offered Dr. Done.
President Victor Berlin stated, "Brian's work exemplifies the quality and applicability of the research produced by the doctoral students enrolled at the University of Fairfax. These students are senior IA professionals seeking to advance the IA state of the art through tested research results. The entire information security profession can benefit from the groundbreaking findings generated by Brian's research. As a CISSP, he has demonstrated both the strength of this certification as well as directions for further improvement. His work serves as testimony to the significance and ready applicability of the research undertaken at the University."
Through its online degree programs, the University of Fairfax cultivates industry and government leaders capable of effectively anticipating and defending against cyber attacks. Given the nation's critical need for qualified personnel who can protect corporate information systems and the field's rapid expansion (forecast to grow by more than 2 million workers by 2010), the information security focus of the University of Fairfax is especially important.
"The dedication and the success of our students are evident even while they are still in school," said President Victor Berlin. He continued, "Our graduates clearly demonstrate how the University accomplishes its mission to provide adult learners with high quality, practitioner-oriented, graduate degree programs that develop highly effective, ethical leaders who address critical issues at the forefront of the information technology arena"."
