Eco-Friendly Spray Bottles Help Consumers Keep Their Homes and the Planet Clean and Healthy

A tough economic climate coupled with growing environmental awareness may be the best recipe for ushering in "green" lifestyle changes this holiday season. For many Christmas shoppers, the perfect gift this year will be one that is made in the USA with a small carbon footprint, using recycled materials, with the ability to promote eco-conscious living - without breaking the budget.

Fitting the description above is one such product line being produced by a small business in northern California. Its creator, Andy Willhoit, has been selling a unique line of empty 'recipe' spray bottles for more than a decade, long before the "green rush" began. Each U-Mix-It Safe Spray bottle (made in the U.S.A. with recycled plastic milk containers) has easy to mix earth-friendly recipes printed directly onto the plastic, providing a convenient way for people to start mixing their own homemade cleaning and gardening solutions. The recipes call for natural, inexpensive and child-safe ingredients common in most kitchen pantries, such as vinegar, liquid soap and baking soda. The cleaning mixtures can be used on everything from showers, to counters, to floors. The garden bottle has recipes for controlling aphids, mildew and leaf chewing pests. Households can easily save hundreds of dollars mixing their own solutions - a value not lost in today's economic environment. Two gallons of vinegar (around $3) will help yield more than 160 spray bottles of homemade cleaning solutions.

None of the recipes printed on U-Mix-It Safe Spray are proprietary. In fact, they have been used by households for ages, well before the mass production of commercial products became common place. What makes these recipe bottles so popular is that they are both useful and symbolic - not just an empty spray bottle to be thrown into the dark corners of the cabinet under your sink. They happily remind the user that living a healthy and green lifestyle need not be expensive or difficult. The bottles are sold online, at, in both a two pack ($8) combination and a 4 pack version ($20). The 4 pack comes complete with a sturdy recyclable cardboard carrying case, a laminated guide loaded with additional green living solutions, three household cleaning bottles and one garden pest-control bottle. Individually, the spray bottles make great stocking stuffers. As a 4-pack, they make a complete and unique eco-gift that will be used for years to come.

To encourage the season of "giving", for every 4-pack sold through Dec. 31, 2008 Willhoit and his company will make a $1 donation to both Blood:Water Mission (an organization dedicated to providing clean drinking water to people in Africa) and the Free Wheelchair Mission (an organization dedicated to providing free wheelchairs to the physically disabled poor all around the world). Willhoit believes this is a win-win situation all around, especially since charitable donations can dwindle in tough economic times.

"For every 4-pack sold, the potential to prevent poisonings and pollution, and to preserve clean water here in the U.S. is greatly improved. In addition, donations will be generated to provide clean water sources for villages throughout Africa, and to provide mobility to the physically disabled poor to ensure that they too have the ability to get to clean water. In my opinion there is nothing more important than the basic human need to have access to clean water. Both of these charities help make this a possibility for those in need. It's our way of giving back and helping to educate our customers in the process. Who wouldn't feel great about playing a part in an effort like that?" Willhoit asks.
