We will look at how technologies that our audience is familiar with, like broadband, personal computers and the Internet, can be harnessed to aid in the green agenda. Whenever there is a massive change, I see the creation of new opportunities. I hope we motivate our attendees to succeed in this quest to fight global warming.
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) December 3, 2008
Award-winning technology journalist Om Malik today announces Green:Net, a unique new conference that will look at how communication networks, software and computing can be harnessed to address some of our planet's most pressing ecological issues.
The one-day event, to be held at San Francisco's Golden Gate Club on March 24, 2009, is ideally positioned to take advantage of the growing industry interest in the use of digital technology, broadband and the web to fight climate change. The event will also include a startup launch session, which will introduce 10 up-and-coming startups that are leveraging digital technologies for green aims. Speakers from companies including Microsoft, Yahoo, Dell, Cisco, Mohr Davidow Ventures, Foundation Capital, JP Morgan, GE and Pacific Gas & Electric have also been added to the event schedule.
"Our conference will examine how the technologies that built Silicon Valley can be harnessed for our planet's ecological health," said Om Malik. "We will look at how technologies that our audience is familiar with, like broadband, personal computers and the Internet, can be harnessed to aid in the green agenda. Whenever there is a massive change, I see the creation of new opportunities. I hope we motivate our attendees to succeed in this quest to fight global warming."
Katie Fehrenbacher, Editor of Earth2Tech, the GigaOM Network's widely cited cleantech publication, is spearheading the conference editorial team. Her work has been published online at The Economist, Forbes, The New York Times and BusinessWeek. "I have been closely tracking the intersection between networks and green technology, and I'm convinced that the technologies that came out of the computing and Internet revolutions will provide the tools needed to fight climate change, whether it's communication networks bringing intelligence to the power grid, social networks affecting changes in the energy consumption behavior of consumers, or simply lessons learned from investing in the Internet boom," says Fehrenbacher.
The conference will feature world-class speakers from both technology and cleantech backgrounds, including keynotes by:
- Bob Metcalfe - creator of Ethernet, Founder of 3Com and Polaris Venture's cleantech-focused partner. A true pioneer of the global Internet, Metcalfe will keynote the opportunities he sees for the next-generation of energy networks and how the lessons learned in the creation of the Internet can shape the energy industry.
- Rob Bernard - Microsoft's Chief Environmental Strategist. Bernard, a long-time Microsoft veteran and a compelling public speaker on green issues, will outline the opportunities for computing companies to use digital tools to reduce carbon emissions and fight climate change.
Other confirmed speakers include:
- Saul Griffith - Co-founder of Makani Power, Squid Labs, Potenco and Wattzon, and MacArthur Prize Winner
- Jonathan Koomey - Professor, UC Berkley and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
- Steve Westly - Founder, Westly Foundation
- Dr. Albert Esser - VP of Data Center Infrastructure Group, Dell
- Rob Aldrich - Principal, Energy Efficient Solutions, Cisco
