Sarah was a leader, and was a friendly, loving, outgoing person whose loss is felt deeply by many
Chicago, IL (PRWEB) December 8, 2008
A $1.25 million settlement has been reached in a case involving a collision that killed a University of Illinois student in Champaign, Ill.
Sarah Channick, 18, of Deerfield, Ill., was struck and killed by a 22 Illini bus operated by the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District (MTD) in the crosswalk at the intersection of South Sixth Street and East Chalmers Avenue on the afternoon of September 29, 2005. She had just entered her freshman year of college.
"Sarah was a leader, and was a friendly, loving, outgoing person whose loss is felt deeply by many," said attorney Jeffrey J. Kroll of the Law Offices of Jeffrey J. Kroll, who represented the plaintiffs with Robert A. Clifford of the Clifford Law Offices. Kroll continued, "Although no amount of money can heal the pain Sarah's family has experienced, this settlement will help them move on and try to put this terrible tragedy in the past."
Channick's family has established a scholarship in her honor at Deerfield High School and in July dedicated a neighborhood park in Deerfield -- the Sarah Channick Play Area - as a lasting memorial to her warm and loving spirit.
The MTD acknowledged and accepted responsibility for Channick's death early in the litigation. Kroll believes this lawsuit will encourage transit authorities to increase bus driver training and improve safety measures, protecting other pedestrians from becoming victims like Channick. After her tragic accident, the city made changes at the intersection to make it safer for pedestrians.
Judge Jeffrey Ford entered the order on December 5, 2008 in Champaign County Circuit Court, with $1.25 million wrongful death compensation coming from the MTD.
Court of Record - Illinois Circuit Court of the Sixth Judicial Circuit, Champaign County, Ill., case number 05 L 267.
