In a recently published whitepaper, a Grimsby based IT company explains how costs can be significantly reduced by the introduction of easy to use, hand held computers.
Innovation Software Consultants has issued the paper to demonstrate to manufacturers in the food processing sector that by embracing 21st century technology wastage can be eliminated from the production line.
"For any commercial organisation, getting it right first time can bring enormous cost, time and resource savings that will improve efficiency and ultimately, customer satisfaction," explained Director, Stephen Mumby. "Those in the food-processing sector are particularly vulnerable to error, as high volume production lines can easily miss Key Production Indicator (KPIs) quality standards, resulting in £1000s being lost very quickly, in part, due to a dependency on antiquated quality admin systems."
According a DEFRA Research Project, UK food producers work with production waste levels running at between 3% and 8% of turnover - but with the introduction of suitable technology and forward thinking management, this figure can be reduced to 0.6% or better. For a business with a £50m turnover that equates to an annual saving of £2.2 m.
"Right First Time is a methodology that sets a goal of zero defects - where there's nothing wrong and no waste, it stands to reason that additional costs are minimised. In a food processing environment the most cost-effective and accurate method of collecting information is to replace the much-favoured clipboard and pen with on-line, hand held computers - mobile data capture."
Innovation Software Consultants has developed 'Tracesoft' (http://www.tracesoft.co.uk) - a unique system that allows operators to deploy a combination of the latest mobile and fixed-point technologies to provide real time data capture using multiple filters to provide quick and easy reporting and trending over time. 'Catch up' software ensures uninterrupted wireless operation and the fully scalable platform is built on architecture that can operate on a single mobile computer or factory wide, with added functionality to manage and control 'roll out' of applications - growing in line with business needs.
"Using these portable, easy to use units ensures quality attributes can be checked against the up-to-date specification in real time, so problems can be identified immediately - before they start costing money!"
