Prestigious Howard Hughes Medical Institute to use Heidelberg Instruments Technology in Biomedical Research

Heidelberg Instruments announced the sale of a µPG101 table top maskless laser patterning systemto the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), Maryland, USA. System will be used for prototyping and fabrication of various BIOMEMS devices and other advanced biomedical applications.

(PRWEB) December 17, 2008 -- Heidelberg Instruments announced the sale of a µPG101 table top maskless laser patterning system

to the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), Maryland, USA. System will be used for prototyping and fabrication of various BIOMEMS devices and other advanced biomedical applications.

The µPG101 is an extremely economical and easy to use Micro Pattern Generator for direct write applications as well as low volume mask making.

It is also perfectly suitable for rapid prototyping of 2D and 3D microstructures on substrates up to 4 inches by 4 inches, and is capable of exposing highresolution features with an address grid of 40nm. The µPG101 is capable of both Vector and Raster scanning exposure strategy.

HHMI, a non-profit medical research organization that ranks as one of the largest philanthropies, plays a powerful role in advancing biomedical research and science education in the U.S. In the past two decades HHMI has made investments of more than $8.3 billion for the support, training, and
education of the nation's most creative and promising scientists. The Institute commits almost $700 million a year for research and distributes more than $80 millionin grant support for science education.

HHMI's flagship program in biomedical research rests on the conviction that scientists of exceptional talent, commitment, and imagination will make fundamental biological discoveries for the betterment of human health if they receive the resources, time, and freedom to pursue challenging questions. Over 355 investigators, selected through rigorous national competitions, include 13 Nobel Prize Winners and 124 members of the National Academy of Sciences. Hughes laboratories, found at 71 distinguished U.S. universities, research institutes, medical schools, and affiliated hospitals, employ nearly 700 post docs and provide training opportunities for more than 1,000 graduate students each year. Founded in 1953 by Howard R. Hughes, the aviator and industrialist, HHMI is headquartered in Chevy Chase, Maryland, and employs more than 2,900 individuals across the U.S. It has an endowment of $17.5 billion.

About Heidelberg Instruments, GmbH: With an installation base of more than 300 systems in over 30 countries, Heidelberg Instruments is a world leader in production of high precision maskless lithography systems. These systems are used for direct writing and photomask production by some of the most prestigious universities and industry leaders in the areas of MEMS, BioMEMS, Nano Technology, ASICS, TFT, Plasma Displays, Micro Optics, and many other related applications.
