Canada's employment market is suffering unprecedented turmoil due to world economic conditions. Statistics Canada recently released employment numbers that revealed 70,600 Canadians lost their jobs in November, the most since 1982. The national unemployment rate jumped to 6.3% from 6.2%. Ontario was hit the hardest as 66,000 jobs were lost last month jumping the province's unemployment rate to 7.1% from 6.5% indicating a greater number of workers available in the next 6 months. There is indication that these workers will start to come from middle and senior level management. Conservative Leader John Tory said in a press release earlier this month, "(it) will get worse before it gets better, we are in for a couple of really tough years."

"The downturn will affect middle managers with greater force in 2009. It is now evident that Canadian executives will not escape the global slowdown," says Victor Wroblewski, Director of Assessment and Program Development with Transition AGENT, a program offered by Slade Consulting Group. Victor explains that SCG has seen a greater number of inquiries by out of work professionals looking for work, plus a number of nervous middle-managers looking to test the waters of their respective job markets.
