Spoleto Festival USA's 32nd Season Offers an Eclectic Array of Productions

Festival highlights from this year's performances

Charleston, SC (PRWEB) February 5, 2008 -- Spoleto Festival USA is pleased to announce the complete program for its 32nd season. The 2008 Festival, slated for May 23 to June 8, promises an exciting range of performances from around the world.

Highlight's of the festival's 32nd season include a newly revised version of Anthony Davis's landmark opera Amistad; a new production of Gioachino Rossini's La Cenerentola directed by Charles Roubaud; the American premiere of the highly acclaimed Monkey: Journey to the West by Chinese director Chen Shi-Zheng and Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, the British artists behind the award-winning virtual band, Gorillaz; the American premiere of the Hotel Modern's innovative live animation film The Great War; the American premiere of Nottingham Playhouse Theater Company's The Burial at Thebes; the festival debut of Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève performing inventive pieces by three largely-celebrated international choreographers; and Laurie Anderson's newest work, Homeland, lauded as her most sonically sophisticated production to date.

Other festival highlights include the darkly humorous vignettes of 1927's Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea; Heddy Maalem's dynamic Le Sacre du Printemps performed by his ensemble of 14 dancers from across Africa; the global sound of the Wachovia Jazz series featuring the Cyrus Chestnut Trio and the US debut of Brazilian pianist Heloísa Fernandes; the late afternoon Intermezzi series featuring a vocal recital with bass-baritone Gregg Baker; the return of gifted pianist Andrew von Oeyen performing Bartók's technically challenging Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra; John Kennedy's groundbreaking Music in Time series; the 33 effervescent concerts of the Bank of America Chamber Music series; performances by the Westminster Choir; and much more.
