Back Pain Patients Dissatisfied with Many Traditional Treatments

Survey finds low patient satisfaction with the over-the-counter pain medications, while massage tops the list as the most satisfying treatment option for back pain.
That's why we strive to provide our visitors with as much accurate and useful information as possible about treatment options.

Montclair, NJ (PRWEB) February 14, 2008 -- A new survey reveals that 71.2% of back pain patients who tried over-the-counter pain medications were dissatisfied, as reported by SpineUniverse.com. This comes as frustrating news for people suffering with pain since these medications are often the first treatment back pain sufferers try.

Several other traditional treatments also left a majority of respondents unhappy with the results: 64.8% who tried chiropractic weren't pleased with the outcome, while 60.6% of people were dissatisfied with spinal injections.

"As someone suffering from degenerative disc disease, I can fully identify with the frustrations of people suffering with back pain," says Bill Paquin, CEO of SpineUniverse. "That's why we strive to provide our visitors with as much accurate and useful information as possible about treatment options."

But there was good news for people currently struggling with back pain and wondering how to bring relief: 60.4% of patients who tried massage found it helpful for their pain--a reason for all of us to take more trips to the spa. Two other treatment options with high satisfaction ratings can be the lowest cost and easiest to implement: exercise and weight loss both satisfied 58% of those respondents who tried these options.

SpineUniverse asked people visiting its website, www.spineuniverse.com, to rate their satisfaction with a range of treatment options. The list included traditional non-surgical options, such as physical therapy and prescription pain medications, but it also had alternative treatments, such as acupuncture and herbal remedies. Additionally, surgery, a treatment option utilized by less than 5% of back pain patients, was listed.
