Physicians Overwhelmingly Select Carefx for North East Florida Regional Health Organization (NEFRHO)
Fusion platform enables health information exchange to simplify access to patient data and improve clinical workflow.
Orlando, FL (PRWEB) March 2, 2008 -- The North East Florida Regional Health Organization (NEFRHO) today announced at the HIMSS 08 Annual Conference and Exhibition the selection of Fusion from Carefx to support its vision of a federated healthcare information exchange (HIE), enabling timely and accurate online exchange of clinical information in the seven county region. Fusion's open and interoperable platform will improve clinical workflow and provide a view of comprehensive, context-sensitive, and clinician-specific patient data housed in disparate applications across multiple healthcare organizations.
William Carriere M.D., a family physician at Family Care Partners, a 45-doctor primary care practice in Jacksonville, spearheads NEFRHO, an organization established by physicians that value broad-based information exchange. According to Dr. Carriere, "Carefx captured my imagination because it provides a consistent, easy way to access information from multiple hospitals within a single view, allowing improved clinical data sharing."
Approximately 150 physicians, representing a mix of primary and specialty care, and two hospitals, HCA - Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville and Orange Park Hospital in Orange Park, will participate in the initial rollout, which is focused on enabling clinical connectivity via a simple, intuitive Web portal that provides unified views of aggregated patient information from Cerner and Meditech application suites. The participating organizations will maintain and store data in their own clinical systems, with NEFHRO deploying applications from Carefx and IBM to connect those systems to its database and application server. To minimize cost and development work, NEFRHO will use the Availity Master Person Index (MPI), which supplies physician access to multiple data sources of demographic and financial patient data.
A grant from the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration and the Florida Health Information Network will pay for most of the cost associated with providing access to and integrating patients' clinical and claims data.
Dr. Carriere added, "More importantly, Fusion from Carefx integrates seamlessly with existing clinical workflow, allowing physicians to focus on providing quality care to their patients without concerns about new technology. Physicians are extremely busy with patients and won't use anything that isn't user friendly or doesn't parallel their workflow. It's a simple concept that Carefx has fully grasped."

NEFRHO also selected Fusion for its open platform, which enables the solution to interoperate with existing clinical systems and extend ROI. This system-wide interoperability was a highly persuasive benefit to facilities considering participation in NEFRHO's e-health initiative. "We are confident that we will improve quality of care and reduce healthcare costs by supplying providers with the information they need to make better decisions at the point of care," stated Renfro.
According to another NEFRHO participating physician, gastroenterologist Jack Groover, M.D., chief executive officer and president of Borland-Groover Clinic, a 34-doctor gastroenterology and hepatology group practice in Jacksonville, "One of my nurses can spend up to 45 minutes tracking down a patient's information. Sometimes, we have to get that information faxed or couriered over while patients are waiting. We waste a great deal of time chasing information externally, which creates a big workflow problem for my practice and disrupts my time. The NEFRHO initiative will help us work more efficiently."
