Booming Demand for Pamplona's Running of the Bulls Despite US Slowdown: spyns.com

Pamplona's tour operators are seeing double-digit growth despite looming US recession. Organizers say this year's Running of the Bulls festival (July 6-14, 2008) will attract an estimated 200,000 per day, many of them Americans.

Pamplona, Spain (PRWEB) March 21, 2008 -- Demand to run with the bulls continues to grow unabated despite global economic uncertainty. As the economy slides into recession, consumers normally cut spending on luxury items such as travel. Not so say Pamplona's tour operators as increasing numbers of American travelers are willing spend top dollar to run with the bulls.

The festival started in 1591 to honor Pamplona's patron Saint Fermin, martyred when dragged to death after the Romans tied him to a bull. Eventually a week-long festival commemorated his feast day complete with evening bullfights. Every morning shepherds drove the bulls to Pamplona's bullring and this run behind the bulls eventually became running in front of them.

Author Ernest Hemingway visited Pamplona in the 1920s and famously wrote about the bull run in "The Sun Also Rises." Overnight the San Fermin festival became an international sensation and the crowds grow bigger every year. Held annually July 6-14, anyone can run with 12 charging bulls during seven morning runs.

Why do they come? "For many, running with the bulls is a lifelong dream," says Ryan King, President of Spyns, a Canadian tour company offering luxury trips to Pamplona. "Our bookings have never been higher with many clients telling us they want to do it now before the economy gets even worse." An experienced bull runner, King has been leading tours to Pamplona since 2004. Although Spyns provides guides, bullfighting tickets, gourmet meals, and four-star hotels, he says everyone wants the same thing. "That one terrifying moment when it's just you, a charging bull, and a mad dash for survival. That's priceless."
