JK Harris Small Business Services Applauds Newest IRS Campaign

JK Harris is happy the IRS is giving new small business owners the help and advice they need.

North Charleston, S.C. (PRWEB) May 11, 2008 -- Bill Lawitzke, Vice President of JK Harris Small Business Services, LLC, says the biggest problem facing most new small business owners is lack of information.

"The IRS is trying to change that by launching a new campaign aimed at small business owners, those who file a Schedule C, Profit or Loss From Business, with their 1040 tax form," said Lawitzke.

"Most new business owners are unaware of most of the filing requirements that are necessary when operating a business," Lawitzke said. "The IRS is attempting to educate these new business owners so that they will be compliant with all the tax issues, by paying taxes properly and timely."

The IRS campaign will begin by providing new Schedule C filers with educational materials via the Internet (www.irs.gov), small business workshops and other outreach events. During the early stages of this campaign, the IRS will be offering basic tips on how to avoid some potential problems.

"They will be instructing employers to properly classify workers as employees rather than subcontractors," Lawitzke said. "This is so they can collect employment taxes. An effort was already underway this past filing season with the introduction of Form 8919, Uncollected Social Security and Medicare Tax on Wages."

Lawitzke said two more things the IRS will be concentrating on are instructions for filing federal employment taxes and quarterly estimated tax payments, as well as proper record keeping and electronic filing.

Other tips IRS is offering include:
- Consider hiring a tax professional to help with the Schedule C
- Protect financial and tax records to ensure continuity in the event of a disaster
- Avoid abusive tax avoidance schemes.
