Cash Cab is modeled on the worldwide hit format of the same name. Since the original series premiered in the U.K. in 2005, it has become an international hit. In June, Cash Cab (U.S.) won the 2008 Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Game show - beating out The Price is Right and Jeopardy. Currently the series is available throughout Europe, South America, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, Indonesia and Japan.
"The game show format is new territory for us, but we are certain that our viewers are going to love Cash Cab," said Ken MacDonald, Vice-President of Programming for Discovery Channel. "This international success story delivers exactly what our viewers have come to expect from Discovery Channel including programming that is informative yet entertaining."
As unsuspecting patrons hop in the cab and buckle up, the lights come on and Growe - initially posing as a regular cabbie - fills the surprised contestant in on the rules of the game. The Cash Cab will take them all the way to their destination and en route Growe will ask them trivia questions regarding science, nature and technology. The questions grow progressively more challenging with each correct answer earning a cash award. The harder the question, the more money it's worth - but beware of incorrect answers! A wrong answer earns a strike - and after three strikes you're out and on the curb!
To avoid getting a wrong answer contestants have the opportunity to use either a "Street Shout Out" or a "Mobile Shout Out" where they stop strangers on the street or call a friend for help. The moment the contestant misses their third question, the Cash Cab pulls over to the side of the road and the unlucky passenger is ejected onto the sidewalk - no matter how far away they are from their intended destination!
En route, Growe uses a TELUS smartphone - such as the BlackBerry® CurveTM 8330 smartphone armed with a state of the art GPS using Google maps - to find the destinations effortlessly while keeping focused on the road and on the game!
