Wikia Statement on GNU Free Document License 1.3

Wikia today announced that it is excited the Free Software Foundation has agreed to allow wiki content available under the GNU Free Documentation License (FDL) to be re-licensed under the Creative Commons Share Alike License.

Version 1.3 of the FDL gives Wikia's communities incredible flexibility in achieving their mission of developing the largest sources of free information on the topics they are passionate about. FDL 1.3 introduces the option for Wikia to convert any GFDL-licensed content on any of its wikis to a Creative Commons license, provided the content either originated on its wikis or was published on the wiki on or before November 1, 2008.

"As we want to ensure maximum compatibility with other free content such as that found on Flickr and Wikipedia, we are exploring the possibility of adopting FDL 1.3 which will allow our communities to add value to the wealth of Creative Commons-licensed content that is available," said Angela Beesley, co-founder, Wikia, Inc.
