Sports Foundation to Host St. Patrick's Day Celebration in Indianapolis

The Indy Sports Foundation will host four St. Patrick's events from March 14-17, 2009 in downtown Indianapolis that will attract thousands of spectators and participants. This is the largest fund-raiser of the year for the non-profit organization that supports amateur sports in Central Indiana.

Indianapolis, Indiana (PRWEB) January 2, 2009 -- The St. Patrick's Day Celebration starts on Saturday, March 14th with the 18th Annual Shamrock Run & Walk. The race starts at Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis and heads to the cultural district of Fountain Square which is home of the "Irish Hill." The Irish Hill was the location of Indy's first Irish settlers in the 1850's. The race concludes with post-race celebration at the historic downtown Columbia Club with live Irish music. A crowd of 2000 is expected at the Run & Walk and participants are already registering at www.indystpats.com.

On Tuesday, March 17, St. Patrick's Day kicks off with the Hoosier Lottery, the Mayor of Indianapolis and Indy's Irish Citizen of the Year dyeing Indy's downtown canal green at 6:30am. The canal greening is a media event that is open to the public and includes live entertainment. The canal greening is followed by the 28th Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade Presented by Cathedral High School at 11:30am. Over 2,000 participants march in the Parade and 20,000 plus spectators are expected along the ¾ mile Parade route downtown. The 100 plus Parade units include marching bands, Irish organizations, Irish family clans, floats, dancers, bagpipes, catholic schools, local businesses, Indy's popular motorcycle drill team and local dignitaries and celebrities.

Following the historic Parade, the celebration continues at the Vermont Street Tent Party as the Indy Sports Foundation honors Indy's Irish Citizen of the Year. The Foundation closes Vermont Street the day before the Parade and erects a 5,000 plus square foot heated tent with a beer garden, music stage and food court. The tent is located just south of the Indiana War Memorial on Vermont Street and is open to the public from 10:00am to 3:00pm on Parade day.
