T3i Group Finds Unprecedented Shifts in Global Messaging Trends as US Matures and Shipments Grow Faster than Revenues

Overall, mailbox shipments grew faster than revenues due to significant gains by manufacturers offering lower than average prices, aggressive discounting and free unified messaging mailboxes with new systems.

According to a new T3i Group research report, global manufacturer revenues from enterprise unified messaging (UM) and voicemail systems reached $604M for the first half of 2008, which was 17% above the same period a year earlier. UM revenues grew 59% over 1H07 to $256M, or 42% of total enterprise messaging system revenues.

Total global mailbox shipments grew approximately 30% in this same period while unified messaging shipments increased by 81%. All regions experienced shipment increases, with the largest being over 50% in EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) and 40% in APAC (Asia Pacific). As a result, North America and CALA (Caribbean and Latin America) lost relative share. A portion of this increase in mailboxes and associated revenue was due to specific inclusion of Microsoft's Exchange Server 2007 Unified Messaging shipments, as well as new promotions and effective bundling of messaging with telephony shipments by major manufacturers. Without inclusion of Microsoft shipments, the decline in North America market share would have been much greater. Other improvements in research methodology and analysis also influenced the final results and growth rates.

Overall, mailbox shipments grew faster than revenues due to significant gains by manufacturers offering lower than average prices, aggressive discounting and free UM mailboxes with new systems. "As markets mature and the global economy slows, cost effective bundling of messaging capabilities with telephony and other products is emerging as a key strategy to maintain sales momentum," said Ken Dolsky, ICA Senior Program Director at T3i Group.

Nortel led all manufacturers in global shipments, followed by Avaya and Cisco. At its current growth rate, Cisco will overtake Avaya in mailbox shipments by the end of 2008.

In the fourth quarter of 2008, T3i Group conducted primary research with its panel of enterprise decision makers to estimate both the volume of Microsoft UM mailboxes shipped in 1H08, as well as to gather information on the decision factors surrounding the selection of Microsoft for UM. A separate analysis of the Microsoft customer decision factors was developed for T3i Group clients. Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 UM received good grades in overall value, ease of implementation and user friendliness.
