Gwen Thomas, President of the Data Governance Institute, will host 'Ethics and Data Governance,' an on-line event with EW Solutions' Anne Marie Smith, Ph.D, January 27, 2009.

In this era of economic crisis and rampant data breaches, is it time to redefine the ethical responsibilities of Data Managers, Governors, and Stewards? Gwen Thomas, President of the Data Governance Institute, will pose this and other questions to EW Solutions' Anne Marie Smith, Ph.D. during 'Ethics and Data Governance,' a free webinar from the Data Governance & Stewardship Community of Practice, on January 27, 2009 at 11:00 AM, New York time (GMT-5).

"Now is the time to ask this question," says Thomas. "Some of the challenges that businesses are facing in this economic environment are related to how data was used to make critical corporate decisions. Often, data managers were aware of problems with that data. We have to ask how things would be different today if they had been able to voice their concerns in a matter that was heard by decision-makers."

Smith will focus on shifting responsibilities for data and information management roles. She will examine whether the traditional responsibility for making data and information 'fit for use' for a particular business purpose should be expanded to a more advisory role regarding the ethical use of data.

"This topic has been buzzing through the Data Governance & Stewardship community for months," says Thomas. "How strongly should we insist on briefing enterprise leaders and users of corporate data about what we know regarding the intended usage of information? I am thrilled to have Anne Marie Smith bring her thoughtful approach to this timely topic."

This webinar will be available at no charge to both DGS-COP members and non-members; advance registration is required. This event will take place between 11:00 AM until noon, New York time (GMT-5) on Tuesday, January 27, 2009.
