US Black Golfers Association to host golf Classic for Injured NFL® Player

The Nation's Premiere Ethnic Golf Club will host a benefit fundraiser for paralyzed NFL player.

Atlanta, Georgia (PRWEB) January 14, 2009 -- The United States Black Golfers Association® (USBGA), the Nation's Premiere Ethnic Golf Club™ will present and host the 1st Annual Richard Collier Celebrity Golf Classic on January 28, 2009 in Tampa, Florida during the week of Super Bowl XLIII™. The golf classic will become an annual event to provide proceeds to benefit the Richard Collier Foundation and will be held on the Wednesday preceding the Super Bowl each year.

On September 2, 2008, Richard Collier, Offensive Tackle for the Jacksonville Jaguars, was shot 14 times while waiting in his vehicle with a fellow, former teammate. As a result of the tragic shooting, Richard became an amputee and due to his spinal cord being severed by one of the bullets, he is now a paraplegic. Mr. Andre Anderson, Mr. Doug Williams and Mr. Isiah Robertson (all NFL Alumni), realizing Mr. Collier's career was over as a professional NFL player, wanted to do something special for their fellow league mate. Mr. Anderson, representing the Boards of Directors & Advisors of USBGA, contacted the CEO and requested a tournament be conducted in honor of Richard Collier and other players who have suffered a career-ending tragedy.

"I graciously accepted the request from our directors and we are pleased to show our support by hosting this altruistic event for Mr. Collier and the Richard Collier Foundation, states S. E. Day, President & CEO of USBGA. 'Since the request, we have contacted our sponsors and the National Football League. All have shown their support to this laudable event and given financial contributions for Richard (Collier) and his Foundation. After speaking to Richard (Collier) and his family about the event and getting their blessings, I knew we were doing the right thing in hosting this event for this admirable young man during the week of Super Bowl 43 in Tampa."

About the Event
Endorsed by the NFL, this annual USBGA golf tournament will be utilized as a fundraising event to provide financial support for the Richard Collier Foundation, which benefits professional players, who have been injured and are no longer able to play the game. This USBGA Golf Classic will be held at Pebble Creek Golf Course in north Tampa, located at 10550 Regents Park, 11pm to 4pm featuring a course points competition, check presentation and acceptance by honored host, Richard Collier, and a award reception to recognize the top team, individual player, and best dressed (USBGA Swagger Award™).

About USBGA
The USBGA is a member-focused, chapter based association, created out of a desire to equalize the game of golf by increasing exposure and accessibility of golf for ethnic golfers of all ages. USBGA will achieve this mission by creating the USBGA Championship Tour, a development tour for ethnic golfers, which serves as qualifiers for entry into the PGA®. Individuals can become members or donate by visiting Richard Collier Golf Classic.
