PD-LD Awarded New Patent for Development in VBG Technology Finding Increases Proficiency of VBG Elements Production

Pennington, NJ (PRWEB) January 23, 2009 -- PD-LD, Inc., the worldwide leader in Volume Bragg Grating® (VBG®) technology, was recently awarded a U.S. patent for a new progression in the technology. The patent, which creates a more efficient way to produce VBG® elements, confirms the leading role of PD-LD in developing, using and promoting applications of this new and versatile technology.

U.S. Patent No. 7,477,818 protects the process of recording a master hologram onto a virgin recording wafer, comprised of a three-dimensional bulk of sensitized silica glass. The method uses a reference beam to produce a transmitted reference wave and a reconstructed object wave that interfere behind the master hologram to create a replica, thus eliminating the need to construct a new master hologram for production.

"Customers will not only benefit from a lower production cost, but a more consistent, better controlled product," said Dr. Boris Volodin, PD-LD's Chief Technical Officer. "By creating an exact replica of the master hologram, there is less chance for errors that might occur when creating a new one. This is a continuation of a series of patents that we have obtained to help streamline the manufacturing process."

This patent also discloses a variety of applications of VBG® elements, such as multiplexers and demultiplexers in communication networks, laser combiners in high power applications and sophisticated optical elements in scientific instrumentation.
