Charlie Ekizian of Wheelchair Sports and Recreation Association and film-maker Brian Dery of Triple Knot Productions have teamed up to present a series of motivational talks to people who suddenly find themselves in wheelchairs. Theirs is a message of hope and encouragement to the 250,000 Americans who have spinal cord injuries, and to the 11,000 new cases that occur each year. They want to reach out to the 1000 veterans who will return from the wars with mobility issues. Most newly injured people are in their twenties; almost all are depressed to some extent. Many feel their lives are over.

Charlie and Brian have been there. Both were almost totally paralyzed and bed-ridden at first, but with therapy and enormous will, they both overcame the odds. Charlie became a wheelchair athlete, got married and had a successful career as a coach and counselor. Brian went back to his career as a film-maker but decided to inspire other mobility-impaired people rather than make Hollywood movies.

Every spinal cord injured person needs to see and hear their stories. The people who love and care for the newly injured need to attend these presentations also. Spinal cord injury isn't a death sentence. Your life has changed. It's up to you to decide if it is a change for the better.

Achieve Through Motivation is a project to present Brian's latest film, Going the Distance: Charlie's Story of Endurance, to as many groups as possible. Our goal is to present the film to 24 groups in the next year, two per month, throughout the country with an emphasis on finding our returning war heroes who have mobility issues.
