Children, Incorporated and the Nantucket New School provided the perfect holiday gifts for students at Beaver Creek Elementary School in Eastern Kentucky, as record low temperatures blast the mid-south. Fourteen Beaver Creek children received coats, boots, hats, gloves, scarves and sweaters in December, which were collected by students and staff at Nantucket New School located on Massachusetts' Nantucket Island.
Children, Incorporated recently added the 14 children to their sponsorship program and the winter clothing provided warm holiday gifts in a region where many children live in poverty. Beaver Creek Elementary is located in the heart of Appalachia in Kentucky's eastern coal region where poverty is widespread and winter coats for children are in great need.
The entire student body at Nantucket New School participated in the collection of the coats and other warm clothing items, all of which were new or gently used. This was a highly targeted clothing drive with the sizes for each of the 14 Beaver Creek students provided before the collection. The shipping and handling costs to send the clothes to Kentucky were donated by the local UPS Store on Nantucket Island.
"The Beaver Creek Elementary Family Resource Youth Center's job is to overcome the non-cognitive barriers that could prevent a child from coming to school, barriers such as food, clothing and shelter," said Georgia Thornsberry, Volunteer Coordinator at Beaver Creek Elementary School. "With the wonderful assistance from Children, Incorporated and Nantucket New School, one barrier has been overcome with four huge boxes of warm coats, sweaters, shoes and scarves."
"The Nantucket New School's efforts on behalf of these vulnerable Appalachian children is so greatly appreciated," said Children, Incorporated President and CEO Marian Cummins. Children, Incorporated is looking to put together more projects with Nantucket New School in the future to benefit more children in need.
