Valentine's Day Gifts from the Heart Not Just the Wallet

NexTag offers gift advice for the special challenges and opportunities of this Valentine's Day.

Consumers who can't afford to splurge on Valentine's Day this year are in very good company. A sluggish economy and climbing unemployment rates have sent sales plummeting; and if Christmas is any indication, retailers can expect more of the same for Valentine's Day. Despite serious sales and price cuts it's likely to be a lean year.

But that doesn't mean anyone should completely write the holiday off, far from it. There are still plenty of ways to share that don't involve painful financial sacrifices. What they do require, however, is time, enthusiasm and the real desire to please a spouse, partner or loved ones. To that end, it's never too early to start planning the perfect gift.

In an effort to get visitors started, the NexTag team has assembled some of their favorite ideas and affordable products to help make this Valentine's Day a happy one for someone special:

Language Stay-cations
Maybe this isn't the year to jet off to Acapulco or Rio with a spouse, but a slender bank account is the true mother of invention. Gift givers can plan a getaway trip and budget that will allow them to enjoy themselves without breaking the bank in a year or two. In the meantime, why not learn the foreign language that will come in handy after arriving at an exotic locale? It's a great way to spend some quality time together and will make the days absolutely fly until it's time to pack the bags and head out.

The Language of Love
Learn to play a musical instrument, or take a few singing lessons to impress a partner this year. Give them a performance they'll never forget instead of taking them to an expensive concert or show. Or better yet, let them get in on the fun and learn to play a duet. Tickle the ivories together and it's sure to be a Valentine's Day to remember.

If it Worked for Fred Astaireā€¦
Not only is dancing fun and a great workout, but with the right partner, it's incredibly romantic. Fan those relationship embers with some classic ballroom or spicy salsa steps! Don't want to go to one of those fancy dance studios? No problem, learn at home with instructional DVDs.

D.I.Y. Gifts
Nothing says "I love you" like a handmade gift; but no one has to be the next Picasso to win over their mate. Remember, the key is to invest time and effort into this Valentine's Day to show a sweetheart how much they mean. So pick up some knitting needles or that paintbrush and get to work!

The Way to a Man's Heart
Actually the way to just about anyone's heart can lead directly from the taste buds, but a gourmet dinner out may not be in the budget for this year. Why not whip something up instead? If a gift giver isn't sure what their Valentine's favorite dishes are they can ring up a friend or family member to find out then head for the grocery store. Preparing a meal may seem a little daunting, but there are plenty of cookbooks, cooking DVDs and magazines to get one started.
