The Gourds, an eccentric, fun Texas band of lyricists who meld disparate styles, will be at Ruta Maya Coffee House February 27th, 2009. Doors open at 9 p.m., and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the SIMS Foundation.
The Gourds seemed to burst forth fully formed onto the American music landscape with the GogitchershineboxEP, a swirling group of originals and unexpected covers that brought the group near-instant recognition. Reissued with additional tracks in 2001 as Shinebox, the band's cover of Snoop Dogg's "Gin & Juice" exploded the band onto the nascent digital music scene through rampant file sharing
when Napster was barely out of Sean Fanning's dorm room.
The new release "Haymaker" is The Gourds 10th CD. "Few acts can make the tenacity of merely surviving sound celebratory, so maybe the Gourds really were made for these times. (Haymaker) is polished and direct but still distinctly and eclectically Gourdian... the Gourds have always been as aesthetically outside the norm as they are stylistically unique," reports Doug Freeman in the Austin Chronicle.
