The Police Athletic League (PAL) of Parsippany was recently honored with a 'Business for a Better World' environmental plaque. The commendation, issued by the First Energy Group of Old Bridge, NJ, recognizes PAL's commitment to the environment and the thousands of children who use their facility every year.

Working with The First Energy Group, PAL recently undertook a major green initiative to conserve energy and reduce their overall eco footprint. The plaque honors their commitment to energy conservation and the community they serve. Parsippany Mayor Michael M. Luther was present at the ceremony, along with Carmine Catalano, PAL President and Joe Plescia, Executive Director of Parsippany PAL.

"The idea behind 'Business for a Better World,'" says Jay Lopatin, Vice President of The First Energy Group, "is that we want the world to know that extraordinary organizations like PAL have put their ideals into action by decreasing their environmental impact. Our hope is that other organizations and businesses will follow suit."

Under the leadership of Plescia, the 36,000 square foot building in Parsippany underwent a green retrofit that included two gymnasiums, and multiple classrooms and offices. The resulting changes will save over 111,578 kilowatt hours of energy every year. This equates to planting 34 acres of trees; removing 17 cars from the road; and annually saving 10,598 gallons of gas. The entire project is also projected to save PAL over $250,000 within 10 years.

According to Plescia, "We have a large facility, and wanted to reduce our energy consumption and impact on the environment." PAL is a recreation-oriented juvenile crime prevention program that relies heavily on athletics to build bonds between police officers and community children. Every day hundreds of children use the facilities which serves as a community hub, offering classes, events, and pre-k programs. The changes provide a healthier, more comfortable setting for the children.

PAL implemented a series of seamless upgrades, including lighting replacements and motion sensors. Now for instance, when no one is using the gymnasium, the lighting will automatically turn off, resulting in substantial energy savings. Additionally, these more efficient bulbs emit less heat yet give off more light--while using less power. This equates to reduced air conditioning use during warmer months and lower energy bills overall.

The First Energy Group conducted the entire project with green ethics in play. Even the discarded lamps were disposed of through a certified environmentally correct method. "The amazing thing," according to Plescia, "is that our bills have gone down substantially, yet the light levels are much brighter. The only downside, Plescia quipped, "is that one staff member complains she can see the lint on her sweater."
