Getting Fit in Your 40s, 50s, 60s and Beyond

TeeBeeDee (http://www.tbd.com), a social network for adults 40+ who believe life is still to be determined, offers insights and advice directly from TeeBeeDee members. With the economy in shambles, most Americans resolved to be more fiscally responsible -- paying off debt, putting more money into savings accounts, and spending less. But when TeeBeeDee surveyed over 550 Boomers, the online social network found that older Americans were less worried about the economic crisis and more concerned with staying healthy -- vowing to get fit, lose weight, and eat well.

The TeeBeeDee Poll was:

Your main goals for 2009 are:
Physical: Get fit, lose weight, eat well -- 48%
Financial: spend less, save more, pay off debt -- 31%
Social: get active in the community -- 11%
Educational: degrees, classes, trades -- 9%

Boomers are embracing social networks like TeeBeeDee in greater numbers because they can meet new friends and get support from people with similar life experiences. One of the most popular groups on TBD is "Getting Fit in Your 40s, 50s, 60s and Beyond" and it boasts over 1,500 members. When the group first started, Boomers wrote why they were taking an interest in getting healthy now:
"I turn 40 in about 5 weeks. I am not fretting at all...I made decisions about how I want to embrace this new decade."

"I'm going to be 50 this summer, starting to feel it. I have arthritis in my feet, back and neck and exercise definitely helps, trouble is I have to just do it!"

"I know there are lots of women my age that look great. I like myself now and know if I get some of this weight off I will like myself even more. I have a medical problem that had me down for awhile, but I am on my way to being me again."

Still, Boomers are also concerned about the economic problems facing America. When we surveyed over 500 of our members on how they are tightening their belts, restaurants came in first as far as luxuries they could do without:

When $ is tight, what goes first?
Restaurants -- 41%
Clothes -- 19%
Movies -- 17%
Alcohol -- 14%
None of the above -- 9%
