Inline skates can cost parents a rather pretty nickel and in this economy, it can be somewhat of an unreasonable request. A new website,, has new portable heel skates that is a fraction of the cost of its mainstream counterpart.

When I first saw these, I was amazed

Throughout the years, roller skates have received major facelifts, notably the popularity and explosion of inline skates, otherwise known as rollerblades. Recently, parents who've came of age in the seventies and eighties have embraced the traditional quad skate style and some, like Melissa Paraskevas, have taken to promoting a modern take of the classic American skate.

Paraskevas has recently launched a new site called where she sells skate buds, or heel skates. These are skates that can be strapped to any shoe - adult or child - with light up wheels. It is able to utilize the comfort and ease of the quad skate and combines it with the chic and portability of new-styled skates.

"When I first saw these, I was amazed," began Paraskevas. "It's something that I've never seen before."

The prices on are a lot lower priced compared to skates at big box retailers or specialty sports stores, a fact that Paraskevas recognizes. "These are great items for this economy," she said. "It's not like working class families can just spend $100-$200 on skates. For the price of one pair of skates, you can buy several of these for the entire family."

As the site is still relatively new, there are only the skates to be found on the site, but Paraskevas plans on adding safety equipment.

"Eventually there will be pads and helmets. I want to emphasize that whether people use these skates or rollerblades, safety should be the number one priority," she explained.

In addition to the planned expansion of the product line, Paraskevas has launched a new blog,

The blog contains information about the skates themselves and offers quite a bit of information regarding safety for both kids and adults. Readers are also encouraged to leave their own comments about the skates or other safety tips to share with other readers.

Still, even with the safety talk, Paraskevas reconciles the fact that she feels a pang of nostalgia when she straps on her skates.

"This is something that anybody can wear and families can enjoy. For me, it's geared towards my personal nostalgia," she said.
